This year’s Soil Association Organic Fortnight (5-20 September 2009) will focus on why organic products offer great value for both your wallet and for the planet. As thrifty shoppers look to make every pound go further, the benefits of going organic on a budget stretch far beyond great-tasting, additive-free food and drink.
Organic is first choice for consumers who want products which don't just taste, look or feel good, but which are environmentally-friendly, ethical, healthy and have the highest animal welfare standards in the UK too. To understand why organic offers genuine good value check out our ten good reasons to choose organic and to make your shopping basket work harder check out our ten top ways to go organic on a budget.Pass it on: for those passionate about the issues they can raise awareness of the benefits by hosting an ‘Organic credit crunch dinner’ for friends.

Vote for Mootral!

A small Cardiff based company with global ambitions to reduce carbon emissions from the livestock industry, has just been shortlisted in the FT Climate Change Challenge competition as one of five finalists with the most innovative global soloution to tackle the effects of climate change.

Mootral, together with Neem Biotech Ltd, have developed a unique feed supplement for livestock that significantly reduces their methane emissions in cows and sheep. The garlic based extract is a natural antibiotic which works by fighting the bacteria in the stomachs of cows and sheep. The company is managed by a team of entrepreneurs passionate about tackling climate change.

It is believed that there are over 1 billion cows on earth estimated to produce a total of 500 billion litres of methane a day, which means that cows are responsible for more than 20% of all greenhouse gases globally!! Michael Mathres, co-founder and director of Mootral considers cow farts to be the most underrated cause of climate change and that is why Estonia, Ireland and Denmark are introducing 'cowfart tax'.

Although Mootral already exists, it is currently undergoing final dosage tests, with a view to launch at the UNFCCC Copenhagen Summit this December.

Voting ends at 5pm GMT on April 1.

So go on, VOTE for MOOTRAL!

Fairtrade Fortnight 23rd Feb - 8th March 2009

Fairtrade Fortnight starts on Monday 23rd February and runs until 8th March. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the two billion people – a third of humanity – that still survive on less than $2 a day. Unfair trade rules keep them in poverty, but they face the global challenges of food shortages and climate change too.

Fairtrade is a people’s movement for change that aims to tip the balance of trade in favour of poor producers. We all need Fairtrade more than ever and we all have the power to create positive change for people and planet.

Take part in Fairtrade Fortnight 2009 and play your part by joining a powerful global movement for change!

Between noon on the 6th March and noon on the 7th March, you can also eat a Fairtrade banana and be part of the biggest banana event. Get your family and friends involved too and "Go Bananas!"

For more information about Fairtrade fortnight and details of how you can get involved or events happening in your area, follow the link to The Fairtrade Foundation.
